Worst Linking Practice
I used to link as much as possible, thinking it would improve my website popularity. And it did to an extent. But the results were definitely not worth the time I spent on it, and I became suspiscious. So I looked into it, and this is what I found.
Worthless backlinks, how they do it
- The majority (65%) of the websites erased their outgoing links shortly after the exchange agreement - early enough not to leave the time for the search engines to acknowledge them.
- Most times, their links were so hard to find on their websites that there was not even a small chance that anyone would ever see them. Meanwhile, I was placing my outbound links in a very visible spot.
- A few webmasters appeared to just be sloppy or ignorant by listing over 100 links in a single page. The robots stopped indexing before even reaching the next page link placed in the footer. One hundred is a theoretical maximum. My experiments indicate that 90 is safer.
- I also found some of my incoming links on an orphan page, not connected to the rest of the website, thus never to be found by the crawlers. Usually, an email informed me of the incoming link whereabout and provided a direct link to land right onto it. Happy with this result, I didn't imagine then that it could be an isolated page.
- A couple of robots.txt files contained an instruction to ignore the link exchange page. This is easy to verify, but who ever does it?
